Currently the 5th largest property and casualty insurance company in the United States, Liberty Mutual Group began in 1912 operating out of Boston, Massachusetts. During the first two years of operation, Liberty Mutual wrote only workers compensation insurance policies. By 1914, the first expansion of Liberty Mutual began opening new doors at the company’s first branch office in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the company began writing Liberty Mutual’s first full coverage auto insurance policies.

As Liberty Mutual Group continued to offer more types of insurance policies, the name was changed to reflect the broader service options. In 1917, as public liability insurance became part of the services provided, the company would assume the name Liberty Mutual Insurance. By the late 1930’s, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company successfully issued insurance policies throughout 48 states.

With an emphasis on driver safety, Liberty Mutual issued high schools driver’s education / safety materials. This effort to educate teen drivers began in 1930 and has continued to the current day. They opened the Research Center for Safety and Health located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, during 1954. This pursuit led to the introduction of two standard vehicle features we now know today – headrests to protect against whiplash and safety belts.
