State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company planted its roots in 1921 with humble beginnings. In order to tackle the elevated costs of auto insurance rates at the time and to establish prompt service on settling claims, one man in Columbus named Robert Pein embarked on a quest to build his own insurance company. With three employees to assist him in a single rented office, Pein developed a new type of auto insurance business with tunnel vision. His idea was to utilize independent agents to meet an agenda for better service to all his policyholders – thus, State Auto auto insurance materialized from a single, focused idea and managed to survive into the next century.

The company offers several different options for auto insurance in order to better tailor policies to their customers’ needs. These options include: the CustomFitSM Auto Program, which can customize coverage to a car owner’s exacting needs including, but not limited to liability, medical payments and physical damage; a Prime of Life plan which offers premium discounts to those over the age of forty-five, as well as several extra-value coverage; gratis, and Auto Replacement Cost Coverage that offers conditional replacement cost in lieu of the actual cash value of a wrecked vehicle.

In the new millennium, State Auto has expanded to offer policies in other areas. The company also handles options on insurance and workers’ compensation products through its insurance subsidiary, Rockhill. Personal and commercial options include auto, homeowners, general liability, commercial multi-peril and fire insurance. The company casts a wide net and has an extended network across the country. It is established in thirty-three states, incorporating thirty-four hundred independent agencies and approximately twenty-three thousand agents.

Since 2006; Robert P. Restrepo Jr. has served as Chairman, President and CEO of State Auto. A graduate of Yale University, Restrepo has a background in the property casualty insurance industry and has also served as Chairman of the American Insurance Association. He is a seasoned proponent of the independent agency system and under his leadership, State Auto auto insurance has been recognized with several awards for its performance in the industry in recent years. The A.M. Best Company has rated it A+ (Superior) not only for its well-known proprietary auto coverage, but also for property and casualty, fire and farmer’s casualty.
